{'I could have killed them' - Lawson faces near miss with F1 marshals
Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson disclosed he narrowly avoided a potentially deadly accident during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two marshals crossed the track immediately ahead of his car
The concerning event happened on the third lap when safety workers were observed on the racing surface as Lawson was returning to the race following an early pitstop to change his compromised front wing
Driver's Immediate Reaction
Shortly afterward, Racing Bulls driver Lawson spoke to his pit wall engineer saying: "Is this for real? Did you just see that? I could have... killed them"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was witnessing"
"I came out on a new set of hards, and then I arrived at Turn One and there were just two guys sprinting across the track"
"I came close to striking one of them, truthfully, it was so dangerous"
Security Issues Highlighted
"Clearly there's been a miscommunication somehow but I've never experienced that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We cannot comprehend how on a live track safety personnel can be allowed to just run across the track in that manner. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm certain we'll get some form of reasoning, but this must never be repeated"
Official Investigation Underway
Formula 1's governing body, the FIA, is actively examining the situation
"Following a turn one incident, the race directors was advised that debris was present on the track at the critical section of that bend" commented the regulatory authority
"On lap three, safety personnel were informed and placed on standby to go onto the racing surface and remove the wreckage once the entire field had cleared the area"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had entered the pits, the directives to deploy officials were withdrawn and a caution signal was raised in that zone"
"We are still investigating what transpired after that point"
