The famous scientist's String Instrument Sells for £860,000 at Sale

Einstein's 1894 Zunterer violin
The final amount will surpass one million pounds when fees are applied

An violin previously owned by the renowned physicist has gone for £860k during a sale.

This 1894 model Zunterer is considered as his earliest instrument while being originally projected to achieve about £300k during its up for auction in the Gloucestershire area.

A philosophy book that the physicist presented to a colleague also sold for the amount of £2.2k.

The prices will have an extra 26.4 percent fee added to them, which means the overall amount for the instrument will rise above one million pounds.

Auctioneers think that the commission are added, the sale may become the highest ever for a violin not previously owned by a professional musician or made by Stradivarius – while the earlier record achieved by a violin which was likely played on the Titanic.

The scientist as a violinist
The famous scientist was an avid player who began playing when he was six and continued for his entire lifetime.

A bicycle seat also owned by Einstein remained unsold during the sale and might get put up again.

The items presented in the sale had been given to his close friend and scientist Max von Laue in late 1932.

Soon after, the scientist escaped to the United States to avoid the increase of antisemitism and National Socialism in Germany.

Von Laue gifted them to a contact and Einstein fan, Hommrich two decades later, and it was a family member who had decided to sell them.

Another violin once owned by Einstein, which was gifted to him upon his arrival in the US in 1933, fetched during a bidding event for $516,500 (£370,000) in the United States back in 2018.
