The UK authorities has placed an additional eleven more destinations to its official warning list regarding the risks of methanol contamination from adulterated alcoholic drinks.

The updated advisory features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to reports of "a worldwide rise in the frequency of reported cases" of methanol contamination.

Only a few weeks ago, authorities had previously added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing list, after a number of high-profile incidents like the fatal demise of half a dozen visitors in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being advised that as little as minimal doses of toxic alcohol can result in vision loss or fatality within 12–48 hrs.

Exactly what is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Utilized?

Industrial alcohol is a harmful chemical commonly utilized in coolant, windshield wiper fluid, and thinner. This substance is not designed for ingestion.

Although it is generated during the production of alcoholic drinks, reputable manufacturers reduce it to low, safe levels for human consumption through the purification method.

But in various destinations, it is surreptitiously added into alcoholic drinks to save money, and as it is tasteless and scentless, it is extremely challenging to identify.

Official Recommendations for Tourists

Authorities minister a senior official emphasized that all travellers should recognize the symptoms of toxic alcohol poisoning.

"While having drinks abroad, stick to well-known venues and steer clear of local brews or complimentary drinks," the official said.

"In case something appears suspicious, such as a headache that's much more severe than usual or vision problems – contact a doctor right away."

The full roster of countries identified as carrying a threat of toxic alcohol poisoning currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
